Your Winter Holidays Skiing

Posted on 2nd November 2011 in Skiing

If your family loves to ski, you should try a winter holiday instead of just a day or weekend here and there. There are some great locations for a family vacation of skiing.

Maine has one of the best and most beautiful ski centers at Sugarloaf. Sugarloaf Mountain became a ski destination back in 1951 when “The Bigelow Boys” cut a ski trail. Sugarloaf Mountain is the second highest mountain in the state of Maine, second only to Mount Katahdin, the highest.

Cannon Mountain, in New Hampshire, in addition to great skiing also is home to the New England Ski Museum. Here anyone interested in the sport can view old ski equipment and clothes, and see movies, photos and art all connected with skiing. This collection is recognized as one of the best sources for information on the sport of skiing, and the United States Ski Association cites it as only one of four museums in the country devoted to the interest of the skiing community.

The Best Heavenly Mountain Ski Resort

Posted on 11th October 2011 in Skiing

The Heavenly Ski Resort is one of the most popular resorts in the United States. Located at Lake Tahoe, on the California-Nevada border and offers four base facilities. This resort stretches out over a massive 4,800 acres! It has 30 lifts and a whopping 97 runs.

Heavenly is situated the highest of any other ski resort in South Lake Tahoe. It is owned by Vail Resorts Inc and was purchased by them in 2002. Regardless of the fact that 360″ or nine meters of snow falls in this area annually the Heavenly resort also houses one of the US’s biggest snowmaking systems so you can rest assured if you want to ski and the snowfall hasn’t been so great, you will be catered for.

With ski resorts, the “ski season” generally begins sometime in the middle to late November and lasts until late April, but this time frame is based on the amount of snowfall the area receives. If snowfall isn’t very good, the season may begin later or end sooner. It’s always a good idea to take a look at weather statistics for the ski resort you plan to visit so you don’t end up with your ski trip being cut short or cancelled.

If you plan on flying in, the closest airport to Heavenly is in Reno, Nevada. Luckily, the resort has a shuttle bus that runs to and from the airport. There are a variety of accommodations to choose from, which vary enough in style and price to suit every family’s needs.

In Heavenly news, a 10-year plan has been approved to allow for continuous improvements to be made to the resort. One of the additions includes The Powderbowl Lodge, which is a skier bridge which will be able to seat up to 950 skiers. Other additions include two new trails which will be the steepest trails on the resort. They also plan to implement an environmentally-safe drainage system as well as a fleet of low-emission buses. So, if you’re planning a ski trip, Heavenly, as well as popular Aspen ski resorts, should definitely be on your list of possible places to vacation at!

Skiing Ways Of Travelling On Winter

Posted on 22nd July 2011 in Skiing

Winter Travel Destinations

Skiing is a very efficient way of travelling over long distances of snow and people have been using it as such for thousands of years. In fact, the first recorded example of skiing was found in Norland, Norway and it has been dated back to 5000 BC. Skiing has been used for rapid travel, hunting and warfare ever since then and almost certainly before.

However, there are basically three kinds of skiing, namely, Nordic, Telemark and Alpine skiing. Skiing was made popular for the international market by Sondre Norheim in the late Nineteenth Century, which coincided with Europeans becoming more adventurous in their choice of foreign vacations – well, for the rich anyway.

Telemark skiing was developed in the Nineteen-Seventies from his ideas on skiing. However, the development of skiing techniques did not stop there. The Austrians, Mathias Zdarsky and Hannes Schneider were instrumental in developing techniques further, although one cannot help thinking that the skiers of seven thousand years ago knew most of those methods way back then as well.
